Just as in the wider community students can be targeted by opportunistic criminals. Among young people students are statistically more likely to be victims of crime. Opportunistic crimes are the most common, e.g. sneak burglaries through open windows or doors left unlocked whilst you just 'nip upstairs.'  There are steps you can take to keep yourself, your belongings and your home safe.

You can find lots of good information, hints and tips about personal and home security on the Police UK website.

  • Always remember to lock your doors
  • Close your downstairs windows when you are not in the room
  • Do not leave valuable items on display
  • Avoid allowing strangers into your home – check the IDs of contractors
  • If provided – use your intruder alarm!

If you are unlucky and have been a victim of crime, you should always report it to the Police on 101.

In an emergency situation, where you feel at risk of serious harm, injury or death you should call the Police on 999.

Once you have reported the incident to the Police, you need to let Unipol know, either by contacting your Housing Manager or the Tenancy Support and Wellbeing Coordinator. They will take some details from you and keep a record of the incident, they may also need to liaise with the Police regarding specific or serious incidents.
